ROAD USERS COORDINATION AND COMMUNICATION

The study is an ethnographic fieldwork on the road users drivers communication and coordination motivated by recent discussions on interaction between road users and road safety.
Our field-work reveals different ways (e.g. by use of the position of the vehicle or variations of the speed to communicate intentions) in which drivers communicate and interact the one with the other in natural settings on real road situations. This should become a critical aspect when discussing safety of road-mobility situations.

Besides familiarity with classic methods such as the ones arisen from human factors studies in virtual environments, HTLab uses in this research an innovative methodology derived from ethnographic research with the analysis of the organization of actions sequence performed in the contextual situation and on the resourced used by persons to structure it. This is a methodology founded on the discourse analysis extended to non-verbal analysis and applied to psychological researching. This research-method demonstrated its value and advantageous use in the area of traffic safety research.
